“8 Códigos” Cibaya The third day of Flamenco en Escena began with the presentation of the CD “Nueva Frontera del Cante de Jerez 2008” by Gonzalo López and Alfredo Benítez. In contrast to the avant-garde influence of the rest of the festival so far, this is a production that aims to offer the most traditional sort of Jerez cante via the perspective of the producers of the recording, and the young singers who participate in it. A strong east wind ruined everyone’s hair-do beginning around sunset on this first day of summer. Even so, and despite the long delay in beginning the first show of three that were programmed, not to mention a soccer match that filled bars and cafeterias throughout the old town, there were plenty of people gathered in the plaza del Cabildo for the beginning of the show. When it finally got underway, the wind had picked up considerably, creating technical difficulties with the sound and other elements, which led to the performance being called off after barely twenty minutes. By then we had been able to see three modern dance numbers, and a personalized version of “La Salvaora” by young Cádiz singer Encarna Anillo. Also in the group were guitarists Nono García and Javier Ruiz, Chique Cienfuegos on piano, Andrés Giampani managing the percussion, Diego Ruiz on bass, Mawi handing cante and Carlos Carbonell dancing. Shortly afterwards, in the plaza San Pedro, with the wind still blowing strong, María Martínez de Tejada offered her one-woman show “La Botella Vacía” with her own choreography and directing. The show “Tejidos al Tiempo” by dancer Choni and her company had to be cancelled. The following day festival director Curro Velázquez Gaztelu apologized for the technical problem that caused two of three shows to be cancelled, and underscored the tremendous effort on the part of the entire team to make the festival run smoothly: “This is our first year and we’ve learned from our mistakes and shortcomings. We’ve all worked very hard so that these companies and their artists would have a place to display their talents, and of course we intend to keep growing and evolving so this does not happen again in subsequent editions of the festival”. clic for enlarge photo
