Once again the Pa’tos Flamenco Festival is upon us with
the Gomaespuma comedy team which has been organizing the fund-raising
event for six years now. As always Juan Luis Cano and Guillermo
Freser knew how to warm up the audience which included screen stars
such as Pedro Almodóvar, Penélope Cruz and British
actor Ralph Fiennes.

Dancer Sara Baras closed out the first night with a bang, leaving
the audience completely enthralled with the woman from Cádiz.
Without any doubt she knows how to get people eating out of the
palm of her hand. Her technique, personality and beauty make a good
combination. She offered two of the most attractive dances from
her show show “Sueños”: farruca and soleá.
She started out the farruca with two dancers from her group, ending
solo. Sara danced very well, thoroughly given over to what she was
doing and demonstrating her art has grown and improved with time.
The dancer works magic with her feet, and the effect is spectacular,
as are her turns, and the way she twirled her jacket at the end
of this dance of mostly masculine conception, adding her woman’s
touch.

She again delighted the crowd with her soleá, dressed in
red and blandishing a shawl, plenty of personal touches, kisses
launched to the audience and again her powerful footwork. The fiesta
finale included all the members of the company where even dancer
José Serrano, wearing clogs, dig his little bit.
The audience at the Colegio de Médicos had a standing ovation
not only for Sara, but also for the other artists of the evening.
Guitarist Enrique de Melchor made his appearance on stage after
a wise opening speech by José Luis Ortiz Nuevo.

Melchor played some pieces from his most recent record “Raíz
Flamenca”. The guitarist who tends towards a certain severity
in instrumentation and usually performs with little more than his
guitar, on this occasion brought a full group. He served up his
most melodic and rhythmic facets with taranto, tango, a bulería
song and fandango. With his customarily clean touch he interpreted
lovely themes, full of delicacy, sweetened by the excellent flute
of Juan Parrilla and the flamenco voices of his wife Marta and Lola
Heredia.
Cante was provided by Marina Heredia. The girl from Granada came
on strong with tonás which she sang with great depth, comparable
to the rest of what she interpreted: mineras, soleá, a poem
by José Bergamin set to bulerías and tangos de Granada.
She gave her all at every moment, pushing the cantes to the limits
demonstrating how nicely her voice is maturing and how personal
her repertoire is becoming.
