Teatro Gran Vía de Madrid from January 16th to March 4th, 2007
Antonio El Pipa is the performer
scheduled to open this first edition of Andalucía Flamenca with
his show “De Tablao” which will run for six days, followed
by a show produced by the Agencia Andaluza para el Desarrollo del Flamenco,
Mario Maya’s “Diálogo del Amargo”, in addition
to two favorites at the most recent Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla, “La
Francesa” by Pastora Galván, and “La Puerta Abierta”
de Isabel Bayón.
The ambitious program also includes artists such as Antonio Canales who
is bringing his new show, a kind of flamenco musical called “Los
Grandes” and dancer Manuela Carrasco with “Romalí”.
Cante will be well-represented on the Madrid stage in the voices of El
Cabrero, Pansequito, Aurora Vargas, Calixto Sánchez, Carmen Linares
and the show “Molina” with Manuel Molina of “Lole and
Manuel” fame, with his daughter Alba Molina.
Cristina Hoyos closes the program on March 4th with the Ballet Flamenco
de Andalucía and the production “Viaje al Sur”.
The scheduling of this first edition of the festival, coinciding with
the Festival Flamenco Caja Madrid, with the aggravating factor of some
of the same performers featured at both events in a short space of time,
has generated an uproar within the world of flamenco as a result of the
public funding for Andalucía Flamenca, as opposed to the privately
funded Festival Caja de Madrid which this year celebrates its fifteenth
anniversary.
With the goal of spreading and popularizing flamenco, the Junta de Andalucía
is trying to jumpstart stable flamenco programming in Madrid by placing
all bets on this first festival at the Teatro Gran Vía with a capacity
of 900, with the festival lasting a full seven weeks.
Flamenco finally comes to Madrid’s Gran Vía to compete with
the big musicals, let’s hope it’s a success and is repeated
every year, fulfilling the desired goal of a stable flamenco program,
and hopefully one which will not be at the expense of the venerable Festival
Flamenco Caja Madrid.
