The evening of Tuesday, October
11th history was made at Málaga’s Teatro Cervantes when Antonio
Fernández Díaz “Fosforito” received flamenco’s
most coveted award, the Llave de Oro del Cante Flamenco, directly from
Miguel Chaves, president of the Andalusian autonomous government.

And thus closes the imaginary door because this fifth Llave in a space
of 143 years is the last one that will be awarded. From now on there will
be another symbol to honor flamenco’s most distinguished artists
in diverse fields of the art.
Next May it will be fifty years since Fosforito’s extraordinary
triumph at the first Concurso de Córdoba where he carried off all
the first prizes and was declared absolute winner. On that equally historic
occasion nearly a hundred singers from all over Spain were eliminated
one by one as the the 23-year-old singer from Puente Genil astonished
judges with his knowledge and command of a wide range of forms.
