THE 21st NIMES FLAMENCO FESTIVAL GETS UNDERWAY

It’s rainy and cold in the French city of Nimes, but from January 10th to the 22nd, it’s the hottest place on the planet for flamenco. The annual Festival Flamenco de Nimes, now in its twenty-first year, is once again a showcase for a wide variety of activities.

The program of performances begins on Wednesday the 12th with the show “Majaretas” directed at youngsters by the Albadulake company.  Over the course of two weeks, artists like Andrés Marín, Lole Montoya, Luis Zambo, Moraíto, Belén López, Jesús Méndez, Belén Maya and Rafaela Carrasco among others are scheduled to perform.  For contemporary tastes there’s Navajita Plateá, and since Jerez always has a presence in Nimes, flamenco fans will be able to enjoy the wonderful show “Mujerez” featuring three of the best female voices from that city, in addition to Diego Carrasco who has become a regular at this festival.

The guitar recital of Moraíto, or Moraíto Chico as some people still refer to him, scheduled for Sunday the 16th, is a much-awaited event among his many admirers since the Jerez guitarist is more often seen as an accompanist.

On Sunday the 16th an award-winning documentary about Huelva guitarist Niño Miguel, as well as the winning works of the Festival de Cortometrajes de Flamenco de Madrid will be projected.

A conference series that begins Tuesday the 18th, with the suggestive topics “Planteamientos musicales del baile flamenco”, “El baile flamenco en el cine”, “El flamenco de mujer” and “Toros, flamenco y Olé!”, will offer a perspective of some of the most relevant aspects of flamenco.
