Presentation of the 7th edition of SUMA FLAMENCA. The complete program.
Text: Pablo San Nicasio Ramos Those of us who thought this year we would have to get by without the Suma festival were delighted when we were called to attend its presentation at the Corral de la Morería. The great leveller which is the economic situation, knows little of art and flamenco, and we had feared the worst. But no. In the end our colleague Verdú, the director of the festival, gathered up his courage and, pulling things out of his hat, presented the seventh edition of the longest flamenco festival in the nation’s capital. The 2012 Suma Flamenca begins June 7th, and continues through the 30th of the same month, offering a valid, though somewhat skimpier program than other years. Among the strong shows are the last Madrid performance of dancer Blanca del Rey, the guitars of Tomatito, his son playing second guitar for Enrique Morente, Jr. and the impressive prodigy, Amós Lora, the voices of Carmen Linares, María Toledo with Yasmín Levy, Valderrama and David de Jacoba, and dancers Aída Gómez, Marco Flores, Selene Muñoz and La Moneta. As in recent years, Suma is joining several Madrid tablaos to offer flamenco nights in the excellent venues Corral de la Morería, Villa Rosa and Casa Patas. During the presentation, attended by most of the scheduled artists and important authorities of the region, Juan Manuel del Rey, manager of Corral de la Morería, thanked all those present for attending, as well as the programmers and institutions for being supportive of Madrid’s competitive ability. Juan Verdú also thanked the Madrid Community for their efforts, and went over the program which, as mentioned above, includes Blanca del Rey as one of its main attractions. The Cordoban dancer and hostess recalled her love for Madrid and the indebtedness she felt, and vice-president Ignacio González thanked everyone for their collaboration in overcoming, as best as possible, current economic difficulties. The evening was brilliantly adorned by dancer Belén López and her group with alegrías, and Amós Lora with some wonderful guitar-playing. Keep in mind that if you keep your tickets from the concerts, you have free entrance to Corral de la Morería Monday to Wednesday during the festival.
