The Flamenco Festival of Madrid
Between May 7th and 26th, Madrid will again be alive with flamenco thanks to the second edition of the mega festival Suma Flamenca. For three weeks, at a variety of venues throughout the capital, and 18 more in surrounding areas, the most popular singers, dancers and guitarists will display their talents.
After the success of the first edition in 2006, this year’s program is even more complete. The main shows will take place at the Teatro Albéniz, opening with Pitingo. On the 7th, 14th and 21st, a series of poetry and cante recitals are scheduled, with the collaboration of José Mercé with Caballero Bonald, Miguel Poveda with José María Velázquez and Capullo de Jerez, or a group of professional Japanese flamenco artists among others.Menese will also offer his classic cante at the Centro Cultural Paco Rabal. Four well-known tablaos will participate in after-hours flamenco shows with major stars like Terremoto, and there is even a children’s program prepared at the Sala Tribueñe. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the lengthy festival is the program of eighteen concerts to be held in outlying towns which will give people outside the capital the opportunity to see flamenco’s biggest superstars.
