Each year in July, a small city in the southwest of France demonstrates its deep commitment to the art of flamenco. In twenty-one previous editions, the biggest stars of flamenco dance, cante and guitar have performed at the various venues of the annual event.
With 25,000 inhabitants, Mont-de-Marsan is no small town, but every year the festival attracts many thousands of visitors for the 5-day event.
According to the information released this week at the presentation in Paris, in this year’s edition Granada dancer Rafael Amargo will open the program with his company, including guest artist Manuel Molina, on July 5th at the Espace François Mitterand with the work “La Difícil Sencillez” inspired by words of poet Federico García Lorca. Andrés Marín will present his work Vanguardia Jonda, and in a more intimate format, Belén López will dance to the cante of Gabriel de la Tomasa and Mari Peña, accompanied by guitarist Antonio Moya. Morón dancer Juana Amaya is also programmed with her group, in addition to Torombo, Angelita Vargas, Jairo Barrull and Lucía Álvarez “La Piñona” among others.
Recitals of cante will be offered by Macanita, Arcángel, Segundo Falcón and Laura Vital with Moraíto, Manuel Berraquero, Paco Jarana and Eduardo Rebollar respectively on guitar.
An admirable parallel program of conferences, expositions and street performances complete the week of rhythm and duende in this corner of southern France.
