Within the series Encontro com Espanha celebrated in the Brazilian city of Niteroi-Rio de Janeiro in April, the Paco Cepero quintet (Paco Cepero plus José Ignacio Franco and Pepe del Morao on guitar, Carlos Merino, percussion and singer Ezequiel Benítez) closed out the occasion sharing the stage with Brazilian pianist Wagner Tiso last April 30th.
The stage for the event couldn’t
have been more apt: the Icaraí beach. In the open air, at dusk,
the encounter of two of the most representative sounds of the musical
traditions of Brazil and Spain. On the one hand, Brazilian composer and
pianist Wagner Tiso, and on the other, guitarist Paco Cepero, one of the
biggest stars of the flamenco guitar.
More than fifteen thousand people showed up for the event. Paco Cepero
and Wagner Tiso played three pieces together, the rumba “Aguamarina”
from his record “De Pura Cepa”, “Cafezatais sem fem”
by Wagner Tiso and an improvised closing number which involved the enthusiastic
and numerous audience.
The Ballet Flamenco de Andalusia also performed with their “Viaje
al Sur”, as well as Spanish singers Luis Pastor and Carmen París.
Representatives of every region of Spain were invited to the event to
present their art, traditions and different forms of expression.
