Dancer María Pagés winner of Spain’s National Dance Prize in 2002 held a press conference to present her new tour with the show Flamenco Republic which in 2004 will travel round the world in the show’s third year on stage.
At the same time she presented the record “Flamenco Republic Tour”
which includes the music from the show and additional music created over
the years and various moments shared with the company at hotels, arriving
at airports and also some sad times such as the loss of Manuel Soler to
whom the record is dedicated. It is not to be distributed commercially
and will only be available where the show is presented as part of the
promotional campaign.
The tour for 2004 has already begun as the group just returned from London
after 5 days at the Sadler’s Wells Theater where they were tremendously
successful: “when the theater was full and they were hanging on
every detail, and thinking of where we were…it gave me goosebumps”
said María Pagés. They are now leaving for New York where
they will present the works “El Perro Andaluz. Burlerías”
and “Flamenco Republic” at the Joyce Theater independently
of any festival “because that’s how we wanted it to be, we’re
out to make it to the top” commented Pagés. The dancer cited
all the cities and countries included in the tour of both shows and added
that strangely, they will not perform in Spain although they would like
to do Madrid and Barcelona which has not been possible thus far, and the
reasons were left for us to speculate about.
The tour will include a new show “Canciones antes de una guerra”
which will be presented in Japan in May, and will also be brought to New
Zealand. “Better trying to prevent war instead of wringing out hands”
said María Pagés when asked what motivated her to create
this show.
