October 26th to November 2nd, 2008, Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht
When the cancellation of the Málaga Bienal has just been announced, the Dutch Flamenco Biennial is back with its second edition. Bigger and more ambitious than in 2006, this year the festival has the intense collaboration of the Amsterdam and Rotterdam Conservatories, as well as NPS Radio and Television. There have been preparatory recitals, most notably that of guitarist Niño Josele, and excitement is high in this small country with a large flamenco following.
Festival director Ernestina van de Noort explained to Deflamenco her firm intention to trace the lineo of flamenco back to the origins of the genre via performances from a diversity of countries such as Colombia, Turkey and India, or Berber music that will be sung by a performer from the Atlas Mountains. Since Holland is a country with a diverse cultural background, the idea is thatthis Biennial will be a platform for experimentation, a kind of complement and justification of flamenco fusion as it has been taking place in recent years. The director comments: «2006 was just the first stone, in 2010 we’re going to open up even more, to reflect how flamenco has the capacity for renewing itself».
The director also pointed out the need to do away with Dutch people’s concept of flamenco as a corny artform for tourists, and offer examples of the contemporary universal nature of the genre, without ever losing sight of the roots. With this in mind, on October 29th Diego Carrasco is presenting his show «El Tiempo del Diablo», which he recently debuted at the Bienal de Sevilla, now with the novelty of a pre-performance talk to be given by Estela Zatania, right on stage, to explain to the audience how we get from funky Jerez flamenco, to the dynamically modern Diego Carrasco they are about to enjoy.
One of the major shows, «El Cielo de tu Boca», opens the festival and just debuted a few days ago at Seville Bienal, by Andrés Marín, a dancer with a large following in Holland and neighboring countries. Also noteworthyis the recital by Córdoba singer El Pele who also participates in Isabel Bayón’s work «La Puerta Abierta». Temperamental young dancer Fuensanta la Moneta will stage her work «Lo Que Trae el Aire».
The next to last day has a full program that incluyes «El Flamenco en Cuatro Estaciones» with Compañía Silvia Marín, a recital of sufi music with Kudsi Erguner & Ensemble, Niño Josele Quintet with Cherifa Kersit Ensemble from Morocco, Ultra High Flamenco (UHF) of Pablo Martín with South American music bu Cimarrón and the presentation of guitarist Chicuelo’s new recording «Diapasón».
The closing day is also brimming with activities, but the icing on the cake will be put by Miguel Poveda with his show «Sin Frontera» with Luis Zambo, Moraíto, Chicuelo and others.
In addition to the performances, there is an extensive program of educational activities that includes illustrated conferences with José María Velázquez Gaztelu, Gerhard Steingress and Faustino Núñez, as well as workshops and master classes in dance, guitar, cante, Kathak and Joropo dancing. The shows and parallel activities are distributed among the three cities, Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht, and a variety of venues.
