Two weeks alter the closure of the sixteenth edition of the Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla, the traditional Giraldillo prizes which have been awarded since the first Bienal have been announced.
Noteworthy are the special Giraldillos for Miguel Poveda and Paco de Lucía for the inauguration and closing galas respectively. Juan Carlos Romero has received his second Giraldillo for guitar-playing, and the prize for best newcomer also went to guitar, in the person of David Carmona. María Pagés has once again earned the Giraldillo for best show, while Eva Yerbabuena’s new work received recognition for stage direction, a new prize awarded this year for the first time as are the prizes for cante for dance (José Valencia) and guitar accompaniment (for Antonio Carrión and Ramón Amador). The official awards ceremony and presentation is scheduled to take place on February 22nd, 2011 at Seville’s Lope de Vega theater. Presided by Domingo González, director of the Bienal de Flamenco, the panel of judges composed of Marta Carrasco Benítez, Manuel Cepero Molina, Cristica Cruces Roldán, Mª Concepción Fernández, Rafael Infante Macías, José Luis Navarro García, Mercedes de Pablos Candón, Aída Rodríguez Agraso, José María Segovia, Juan Manuel Suárez Japón and Antonio Zoido Naranjo agreed to award the following prizes:
