Between January 28th and June 13th, thirty-eight shows, with a wide range of styles, generations and formats, will make up the concert series Flamenco Viene del Sur whose program was presented in Seville on Wednesday morning.
After being held eleven years in Seville, Málaga and Granada, for the first time this “movable festival” will also go to major theaters in Cádiz, Córdoba and Jaén with 13 more shows than in the previous edition. Culture minister Rosa Torres emphasized the government’s intention to continue expanding the program, which in 2009 will include Huelva and Almería.
This year’s program gets under way in Granada on January 28th with the premiere of “Mujeres” starring dancers Merche Esmeralda, Belén Maya and Rocío Molina. Other dance shows are headlined by Javier Barón, Antonio el Pipa, Rafaela Carrasco, Fuensanta la Moneta and Manuela Carrasco among others.
Flamenco guitar will be splendidly represented by Manolo Sanlúcar, Tomatito and Paco Cepero respectively, and the important specialty of flamenco singing will be taken care of by stars such as Marina Heredia, Luis el Zambo, Calixto Sánchez and Esperanza Fernández, with Juan Peña “Lebrijano” closing out the cante series in Seville on May 20th.
