Seven events featuring seven extraordinary artists, to provide a basic understanding of this enigmatic and seductive art that has its roots in both cultured and popular tradition, and is an unusual mix of passion and suffering.
The
three essential Flamenco categories, on which this singular and thrilling
art pivots, are given equal emphasis in the programme of the first Flamenco
project organized by the Fondazione Musica per Roma. They are: el cante
(el cante jondo, the traditional flamenco song); el toque (guitar music
accompanied by the rhythmic clapping of hands and stamping of feet); and
el baile (the dance).
El cante: no other performer is as charismatic as Enrique Morente (14/09);
no one has a voice as haunting as Carmen Linares (23/09); no other singer
of the new generation that has succeeded the aforementioned icons is as
cultured as Miguel Poveda (16/09). Morente, Linares and Proveda are a
truly unbeatable threesome.
El toque: this aspect of Flamenco, where the guitar is the main instrument
and las palmas (the hands) provide the necessary accompaniment to create
the beat, will be performed in Rome by two exceptional artists: Tomatito
(13/09), the legendary Camaron’s favourite guitarist, and Gerardo
Nunez (22/09), the most impressive performer of the latest generation,
and worthy heir of Paco de Lucía or Manolo Sanlúcar. Nunez
will also accompany Carmen Linares (23/09), to create a dazzling duo.
And lastly el baile: here one is immediately struck by the contrast:
the passion and spirit of Eva Yerbabuena (who will première in
LUGLIO SUONA BENE 2005 on 29/07) is counterpointed by the originality
and creativity of Israel Galván (15/09). Eva’s whirling movements
are rooted in tradition; her body is aflame with passion and she knows
how to communicate it. Whereas Israel, always a step ahead, engages in
the boldest kind of experimentation.
On these truly spectacular evenings, in the Auditorium there will be
a “tablao flamenco” like Casa Patas in Madrid, where after
the show, the spectators can tuck in to a delicious paella and other Spanish
specialities, have a glass of wine or sangria and, above all, enjoy more
excellent music and dance performed live by Italian professionals –
who knows, maybe Tomatito, Morente, Carmen Linares and the other artists
will join the group for an amazing open-air Flamenco jam session!
The Festival programme features another remarkable event!
From 10.00pm onwards on Saturday 17 September, the AUDITORIUM PARCO DELLA
MUSICA will participate in LA NOTTE BIANCA (WHITE NIGHT), a free event
for all Rome’s citizens and visitors to the city. For the occasion,
the Auditorium is organizing a big FIESTA FLAMENCA featuring an orchestra,
various Italian flamenco groups, and a DJ set on the same theme to close
the evening which, we repeat, will be entirely free of charge!
