Seven years ago, a project got underway that, according to specialized observers was «destined to failure». The experts warned that a festival dedicated to flamenco could not possibly be successful in the United States. But it was held all the same. And the following year as well, and the next, and it was later extended to London and Paris, and now those same experts can scratch their heads and observe how the event, known simply as «Flamenco Festival», in its eighth edition, is going to China to coincide with the official Year of Spain in China.
With the support of the Spanish Embassy in Beijing, the INAEM, the Agencia Andaluza para el Desarrollo del Flamenco, the Seville municipal government and the Instituto Cervantes, true to its motto to “bring the best flamenco to the major theaters of the world”, the festival is presenting some of the most relevant artists of the contemporary flamenco scene, with shows in Beijing and Hong Kong. On November 1st, Ojos de Brujo debuts in Hong Kong with their show Techarí, and a few days later, the voices of Miguel Poveda, Carmen Linares, the guitar of Juan Carlos Romero and the dancing of Rocío Molina will join forces for a flamenco gala. Beginning the 17th, another gala will feature Merche Esmeralda, Belén Maya, Manuel Liñán, Olga Pericet, Marco Flores and Daniel Doña. This same show will also travel to Australia where it will be presented at the Sydney Opera House, in addition to Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth. Parallel activites, in collaboration with the Instituto Cervantes and the Spanish Embassy in Beijing, include guitar, dance and percussion workshops as well as an encounter with Merche Esmeralda and Belén Maya among others at the Instituto Cervantes in Beijing. In Hong Kong, Olga Pericet will offer a master class for students of flamenco dance.
