Classical ballet is Russian,
opera is Italian and flamenco is Spanish, right? Not entirely, and nowadays
the cultural manifestation that most identifies Spain the world over is
rapidly becoming a fundamental fixture of global culture. In Spain’s
neighboring country the festival offer continues to grow. This year in
France the Fifteenth Festival Flamenco de Nimes, the first festival of
the new year, rivals that of Mont-de-Marsan not only in length –
it’s been expanded to six days – but also in the quality of
the program which includes both major stars and the most interesting young
newcomers.
The first day brings a new production of “El Romancero Gitano”,
and Wednesday the 26th offers the chance to enjoy several of the winners
from the last Concurso de Córdoba: Gabriel Expósito on guitar,
La Tremendita in cante and Soraya Clavijo in dance with the backup of
veteran singer Curro Fernández. The following day is “Flamenco
de Cámara”, the successful work of two women, dancer Belén
Maya and singer Mayte Martín. Friday’s show titled “Noche
de Cante” brings Juan Moneo “El Torta” and La Susi.
Dancer Mercedes Ruiz’ show “Gestos de Mujer” will have
the luxury of young guitarist Javier Conde to open. Within the parallel
activities scheduled for the 29th and 30th there is to be a conference
titled “Málaga en el cante flamenco” by Gonzalo Rojo
Guerrero, president of the Spanish Congress of Flamenco Peñas.
