The
traditional annual happening to compás that takes place each year
in Jerez de la Frontera called the Fiesta de la Bulería, and which
attracts more than seven thousand individuals, both local and from abroad,
this year will have a luxurious setting. Due to the impossibility of holding
the festival at the bullring as has been the custom for years, municipal
authorities have announced that the mega event scheduled for next September
9th at ten o’clock at night will take place at the gigantic municipal
stadium Chapín, considered one of the best and most modern in Europe.
With a capacity of 21,000, there are plans to section off one end of
the stadium with two thousand chairs, in addition to the ample stands
which will accommodate the expected crowd. The Fiesta de la Bulería
which was inaugurated right at the peak of the festival era, this year
reaches its thirty-ninth edition. It has always been an identifying event
for Jerez, and hopefully it will be able to return to its regular setting
next year after certain structural deficiencies are repaired at the bullring
which is temporarily closed.
Another novelty this year is the sponsorship of the Agencia Andaluza
para el Desarrollo del Flamenco, the official agency that oversees all
flamenco matters in Andalusia.
The program includes the most popular Jerez stars such as singers Capullo
de Jerez, Tomasa la “Macanita” and Fernando Terremoto and
dancer Joaquín Grilo. A cuadro flamenco from the Méndez
family, of Paquera’s people that is, will offer their own particular
vision of flamenco as done in the San Miguel neighborhood. And to round
out this spectacular collection of talent, are Susi, from Alicante, she
of the sweetly painful voice and the wonderful dancing, and the popular
Diego el Cigala.
Stadium authorities have warned that the special lawn for soccer games
must not be touched or damaged in any way….we’ll see how fourteen-thousand
feet (seven-thousand spectators) manage to keep off the grass.
