The leading flamenco festival in the United States has unveiled this year's program.
This year the International Flamenco Festival of Alburquerque is celebrating it's 28th edition. The most important event of this sort outside of Spain has managed to overcome diverse problems and obstacles, most notably the loss of their center of operations in a massive fire just over a year ago, to bounce back stronger than ever with a typically impressive program that includes young, cutting-edge artists as well as revered veterans.
In last year's festival, the unexpected success of a cante recital with Enrique el Extremeño and Juan José Amador, in a festival normally focused on flamenco dance, has inspired the organization to include concerts by singers such as José Valencia from Lebrija, David Sánchez from Morón de la Frontera, and none other than the beloved Jerez singer Juana la del Pipa.
Catalonian singer Montse Cortés will appear with her group at the inaugural fiesta on June 7, an event with free admission. The following day, superstar Antonio Canales with the collaboration of Adela Campallo, is scheduled to perform. Popular dancers Concha Jareño and Rafael Estévez will present «El Baúl de los Recuerdos», José Maya and Company are sure to generate sparks, and Pastora Galván is bringing her successful show, «&dentidades».
The last two days of the festival will be given over to «Fiesta Flamenca», a joint effort by all the principal performers, along with the flamenco repertory company Yjastros.
As in other years, a diverse program of classes and workshops for all levels is being offered.
