When many of us are still digesting the Festival Flamenco de Córdoba which closed its doors just two weeks ago, another major musical event is scheduled for early July in the same city: the Festival de la Guitarra de Córdoba.
And the big news this year is the performance on Saturday, July 10th
of none other than Paco de Lucía. Spain’s guitar genius whose
fame has crossed every border making him a superstar wherever he goes,
is coming home.
The
flamenco offering in this festival which has seen the participation of
major stars such as Manolo Sanlúcar, Vicente Amigo, Tomatito and
Sabicas, and which embraces every type of guitar manifestation, both national
and from abroad, will be spectacularly fleshed out with Tomatito's performance with the Orchestra of Córdoba, the music of Raimundo
Amador and the dance of two first-line groups, Antonio Canales and Javier
Latorre.
An ample program of courses is scheduled with Manolo Sanlúcar,
José Antonio Rodríguez and Manolo Franco for guitar, Javier
Latorre and Inmaculada Aguilar for dance and Calixto Sánchez giving
cante instruction.
The two-week program of activities also features films, exhibits and conferences,
the most interesting series being the Jornadas de Estudio which this year
will be devoted to Paco de Lucía and includes the authoritative
participation of guitar expert Norberto Torres. Paco will also be honored
with an audiovisual exhibit and the presentation of two books related
to his life and work.
