The Morente family announced that today, Monday, December 13th at 5:00pm, Enrique Morente passed away.  After several days bravely fighting against death, Enrique Morente, uniquely creative artist and a wonderful person, leaves an enormous empty space in our hearts and in the music of those to whom he dedicated his entire life.

After more than a week in a Madrid clinic, and after undergoing two emergency operations, the Granada singer’s condition suddenly worsened as a result of two cerebral strokes which resulted in irreversible damage with the fatal outcome.

The whole world of flamenco is trembling, overcome by this irreparable loss.  One of the pillars of this art-form has left us when he still had a great deal to say and to contribute.

Born on Christmas day in 1942, the universal Granada man entered the annals of flamenco history decades ago as one of the main renovators of the genre, with recordings and experiences that have become the mainstay, always taking inspiration from his profound knowledge of music and the flamenco tradition.

Decorated with Spain’s Medalla al Mérito de las Bellas Artes, as well as numerous music prizes, Enrique Morente was an inimitable artist, possessing a legion of followers who today, without a doubt, are bitterly grieving.

It is a time for solidarity among flamencos to support the family and pay tribute to one of the greatest artists in the history of Spanish music.
