Last Thursday, February 1st, the specialized flamenco press held their annual awards.
This eighth edition was celebrated at the Madrid tablao Corral de la Pacheca, with many major stars in attendence such as Sara Baras, Miguel Poveda and Joaquín Grilo among many others.A jury composed of nearly forty expert critics from the various media – newspaper, radio, television and internet – selected winners in seventeen different categories.
Young Catalonian singer Miguel Poveda received the most coveted prize, that of Best Cante Record, for his recording “Tierra de Calma”, which was very well received a few months ago when it was presented at Seville’s Bienal de Flamenco.Guitarist and composer Manolo Sanlúcar was awarded two prizes: Best Composer and Best Solo Guitar Recording thans to the Medea he wrote for the Ballet Nacional de España. Sara Baras and Joaquín Grilo were respectively voted Best Female Dancer and Best Male Dancer, and Pilar Sánchez, mayor of Jerez, presented Grilo his award while taking advantage of the moment to invite the critics’ association to hold next year’s awards ceremony in Jerez.Israel Galván’s “Tabula Rasa” was voted Best Flamenco Show and Rocío Molina, Best Newcomer in Dance. The town of Morón de la Frontera had its night when the group Son de la Frontera won for Best Instrumental Record for their second recording, “Cal”, and Morón guitarist Daniel Méndez was awarded as Best Accompaniment Guitar for the recording “Ropa Vieja” with singer Arcángel. The gala event was ably conducted by Alfonso Eduardo Pérez Orozco, founder of these awards, and the evening was rounded out with the projection of the first released images from the new film biography of Lola Flores, “Lola”, which premieres in March, with the presence of the actress who plays Lola, Gala Évora.
