Through September 12th, the town of Mairena del Alcor will pay tribute to Antonio Mairena with numerous events. The National Contest of Cante Jondo, and the Festival de Cante Jondo are the centerpiece of the tribute.
September 5th marks thirty years since the passing of Antonio Cruz García, Antonio Mairena. The municipality is honoring his memory with a series of acts to celebrate the life and work of this universal figure of paramount importance to flamenco singing.
On September 2nd the program begins with commemoration of the 45th anniversary of the monument to cante jondo on the occasion of its restoration, and at the Casa Palacio an evening of poetry and flamenco will be offered.
Also included are exhibits such as “Los Caminos del Cante Jondo” of Moreno Galván, projection of the documentary “Francisco Moreno Galván: La Fuente de lo Jondo”, conferences such as “Antonio Mairena: Un gitano universal” and presentation of the re-release of the record “El Corazón por Entero”. This recording was the last performance of Antonio Mairena and was made at the Peña El Taranto in Almería.

On September 7th at the Casa Palacio at 10:30pm, the festival includes the performances of Marina Heredia, José Valencia, Antonio Reyes, Antonio Ortega and Manuela Cordero with the accompaniment of guitarists Antonio Carrión, Antonio Higuero, José Quevedo and Juan Requena, and the dancing of Belén Maya.
