“Pokito a poko”
is the title of Chambao’s new albun, and it defines the intent of
the group from Málaga: to walk into the future, step by step, and
develop a different and personal kind of music.
Time has proven Chambao to be right, the only group able to fuse, with
full artistic sense, certain harmonies and flamenco forms with electronic
music. The label flamenco chill appeared quickly to define a kind of music
the group prefers to place at the most popular level of flamenco, and
the most interior of “chill out”. In other words, pure Chambao.
“Pokito a poko” is an inspired album, street-wise and far
removed from elitism. Both light-hearted and laid-back, it’s marked
by a livelier rhythmic sense than in any of their previous work, not to
mention the relaxed ambience so characteristic of Chambao.
“Pokito a poko” brings the essence of bulerías, tangos
and rumbas to create a new language where everything passes through such
a personal filter that nothing is what it appears to be. It’s admirable
that Chambao’s creation, based on flamenco, manages to cross frontiers
and become universal, far from localism yet without giving them up completely.
That is Chambao’s great achievement, pulled off with astonishing
naturalness, expressed with a warm heart and not cold technology. The
organic sound of the south of Spain takes precedence over the cold, distant
sound of computerized music and mark the character of a surprising album.
