Del 14 de julio al 1 de agosto. Teatre Victoria, Barcelona
Young flamenco dancer Juan de Juan is taking over from his maestro Antonio
Canales in the work “Torero”, a dramatic flamenco musical
in which two related disciplines are integrated: bullfighting and flamenco
dance, both with a common artistic language.
On stage the show creates the most intimate moments of the bullfighter:
his passion, elegance and devotion, and his fear during the ritual of
nobility, art, blood and sand.
“Torero” premiered with great acclaim at Montreal’s
Place d’Arts Theater in 1993 under the direction of Antonio Canales
who also starred. Later, the show began a long tour of Canada’s
most important cities and in 1994 was presented in Spain for the first
time, at the Teatro de Madrid where it was on the bill for 25 days.
Since its premiere Antonio Canales’ Ballet Flamenco has performed
“Torero” over 700 hundred times, both in Spain and in numerous
international festivals.
In the 1995 edition of the Emmy awards, Spanish television’s production
of “Torero” was nominated in the category of “Best artistic
presentation”, and was semifinalist. That same year Antonio Canales
was awarded the Premio Nacional de Danza and in 1996, the show’s
choreography won the silver medal of the FIPA in Biarritz.
The presentation of Torero by Juan de Juan’s Ballet Flamenco will
be complemented by the premiere of a work called “Al Sur”
making a well-rounded show with two well-differentiated parts. In the
first, the audience is taken back to the most primitive essence of this
art, starting with the voice of the human body’s rhythmic beating,
and in the second flamenco guitar harmonies and percussive elements are
introduced leading to a complete portrait of flamenco.
