With the registration period closed, 117 artists signed up to participate in the twentieth Concurso Nacional de Arte Flamenco de Córdoba.

The initial selection process will take place from the 12th to the 16th of November at the Gran Teatro de Córdoba.  Those selected will pass to the next phase to be carried out in the same place November 23rd to 26th, and from which the panel of judges must choose a maximum of four finalists for each specialty, singing, dance and guitar.

Of 117 aspiring contestants, 66 are going for singing, 42 for dance and 9 for guitar.  The contest stipulates three first prizes of 10,000 euros each, and five performances throughout the province of Córdoba, and three second prizes of 4,000 euros each.  In addition, all finalists will receive a prize of 2,000 euros each.

Nearly all the contestants are Spanish, although there are some from abroad: 3 from Japan, 2 from the United States and 1 from Cuba.  As always, the majority are from Andalusia with 87 of the 117 people who registered.  Seville, Cádiz and Córdoba each have 21 people signed up, Granada has 10, Málaga 5, Huelva 4, Almería 3 and Jaén 2.  From the rest of Spain there are 10 from Madrid, 6 from Barcelona, 3 from Badajoz and one each from Cáceres, San Sebastián, Bilbao, Toledo and Murcia.

The closing gala event that ends the contest will be presented at the Gran Teatro on Saturday November 30th, and all the winning artists will perform and receive their prizes. 

The initial selection process and the second stage are both open to the general public.  The first part, to be carried out at the Gran Teatro is free entrance to capacity.  Tickets will be sold for the second stage as well as the closing gala.

Programmed shows

As is customary, a program of parallel activities including shows has been planned.  Estrella Morente will present her latest record on November 10th.  On November 19th there will be a dance program with Rafael Estévez and Nani Paños and their show Consagración with the collaboration of Antonio Ruz.  The following day the Teatro Góngora is the venue for a new work by Miguel Ángel Entrenas,.

On November 22nd is Rosario Toledo’s show Aleluya Erótica, and the last show of the program is a world premiere: “Fatum!”, the work of Shoji Kojima with the choreography of Javier Latorre, and the music of Verdi and Chicuelo.
