7th 'FLAMENCO HOY' Critics’ choice awards

Thursday, February 2nd, 2006. Corral de la Pacheca, Madrid.

The critics’ choice awards
“Flamenco Hoy” were founded seven years ago following the example
set by the worlds of jazz or rock where this type of prize has long been
a means of taking a reading of expert opinion and getting a perspective
that does not always coincide that of public opinion.

Ever since the first edition which was organizad thanks to the efforts
of Alfonso Eduardo Pérez Orozco, a professional media man with
a long history tied to flamenco, the event has continued to grow both
in proportion and prestige. Last night at Madrid’s lovely Corral
de la Pacheca tablao, some 350 people from the world of flamenco, artists
and critics alike, attended the presentation of the Flamenco Hoy awards
for 2005.

A jury of close to forty specialized critics from a diversity of media
– newspapers, magazines, radio, TV and Internet – were able
to see the results of their voting in fifteen different categories. The
presentation included the projection of several film clips, just like
at Hollywood’s Oscar awards, most notably a few minutes of the film
“Camarón”, whose star, Oscar Jaeneda, was among those
present, and which triggered the audience’s warm applause.

The event was supported by the Andalusian government’s Turismo
Andaluz with the collaboration of Casa Patas, Corral de la Pacheca and
the Agencia Andaluza para el Desarrollo del Flamenco.
