37th Reunión de Cante Jondo de la Puebla de Cazalla

Saturday, July 9th, 2005. 11:00pm. Patio de la Hacienda ‘La Fuenlonguilla’

Nowadays
it’s hard to put together a good program for a cante festival without
the presence of at least one person from Jerez, but in La Puebla de Cazalla
this year, flamenco fans will have the opportunity to savor the art of
some very authentic flamenco areas off the beaten track.

At the top of the bill is the most important voice from Catalonia (north-eastern
Spain), Miguel Poveda, who continues to consolidate his image and prestige
when just a few years ago he was barely known in Andalucía. He’ll
be accompanied on the guitar by his excellent and faithful sidekick Chuscales,
also from the north.

From Eastern Spain two voices, one young hopeful and the other, veteran.
Like fine wine, the great Cañeta de Málaga doesn’t
get older, just better. This singer and dancer from Málaga, specialized
in the most rhyhtmic forms has gone to La Puebla’s festival on other
occasions and been extremely well-received. This year she returns with
guitarist Antonio Soto to demonstrate that Málaga also has quality
flamenco. From Granada, Victor El Charico at 25 is surprising flamenco
fans with his high-quality traditional singing. His astonishing performance
in La Puebla last February led to this important festival where he will
be accompanied by Emilio Maya, also from Granada.

La Puebla has the luxury of being the hometown of two extraordinary voices
who helped put the town on the flamenco map: José Menese and Diego
Clavel. They never miss this annual appointment with their roots, and
Antonio Carrión’s accompaniment always gives the classic
ambience they both deserve.

The dance portion of the program has also shied away from the customary
names. Veteran Pepa Montes with her husband, guitarist Ricardo Miño,
and the splendid young dancer Pepe Torres from the neighboring town of
Morón de la Frontera, along with his group are the featured dancers.
Pepe is the dancer who participates with palmas and dance in the group
Son de la Frontera.
