The «City of the Soleá», that’s how the 34th International Congress of Flamenco programed for September 6-9 in the venerable town of Joaquín de la Paula, one of the creators of this basic flamenco form, is being billed.
Over
the course of four intensive days, speakers, investigators, writers and
artists will pay tribute to the cante and artists of Alcalá, 9
miles southeast of Seville. Those attending the Congress will be able
to enjoy conferences, book presentations, round-table discussions, tributes,
a painting exhibition, a photography exhibition and high-quality flamenco
shows.
On September 6th the activities kick off with the keynote speech of Manuel
Suárez Japón, head of the Universidad Internacional de Andalucía,
and Antonio el Pipa’s show at the theater. On Thursday, there are
some interesting activities such as a dialogue between Matilde Coral and
Cristina Cruces about the dance of soleá, a conference by Juan
de la Plata and a round-table discussion which will include guitarist
Niño Elías and singer Segundo Falcón moderating.
That same day, investigator Manuel Martín will present the book
“Figuras Relevantes del Flamenco en Alcalá”, and at
night the show includes the group Sabor Jerez and singer Rancapino.
On Friday the 8th, writer Ríos Ruiz will offer his “Exaltación
del Baile Flamenco” followed by an interesting round-table discussion
about flamenco journalism, with the participation of noteworthy professionals
of the trade. After an afternoon of further activities, at night Málaga
guitarist Daniel Casares will offer a recital at the Nuevo Coliseo.
The final day will be devoted to singer Antonio Fernández “Fosforito”,
who was recently awarded the Golden Key of Cante, beginning with a conferce
about the singer given by Gonzalo Rojo. The afternoon and evening include
a flamenco mass with Niño Elías and El Sacri, and the show
of dancer Javier Barón who is from Alcalá de Guadaíra.
When the Congress concludes there will be continuity throughout 2006
and 2007 with a program of activities designed to support young flamenco
artists and to interest the local population in the history and evolution
of flamenco in Alcalá. Artists like Paco Taranto, Carmen Ledesma,
