From January 7th to 18th the best flamenco artists will again descend on the French city of Nimes. This first festival of the 2014 flamenco calendar, will be held at the Theatre de Nimes, now bearing the name of Bernadette Lafont. The official poster, is again based on the work of the great Vicente Escudero.
Flamenco fans from the south of France will be able to enjoy top-level flamenco stars who triumphed at Nimes when they were unknown, such as Israel Galván with “Lo Real”, and Rocío Molina, artist in residence, who will present “Afectos”, while the second week she will be preparing her new work, “Impulso”, which is scheduled for the Nimes festival of 2015.
Those who attend will be able to enjoy the voices of Argentina and Marina Heredia who are presenting their successful shows. From Jerez, Melchora Ortega and David Lagos will offer a cante recital, as will José Valencia of Lebrija, sharing the stage with the classic dancer from Morón, Pepe Torres.
In dance, two other figures will ne featured: Andrés Marín, immersed in a tour with French artist Bartabas will revive his work ‘Tuétano’, which he will present in this edtion of the festival with Concha Vargas and Macanita as guest artists. Isabel Bayón, recent winner of Spain’s national dance prize, is presenting her show ‘Caprichos del Tiempo’ which she took to the Festival de Jerez earlier this year.
Traditional singing and dancing from Extremadura, will again be present in Nimes after the success of the 2013 edition, with La Negra, Guadiana, the dancing of El Peregrino and the special collaboration of singer Ramón el Portugués to make this a tribute to Porrinas de Badajoz.
On another stage, the wisdom and experience of Márquez el Zapatero and Antonio Ruiz El Carpintero, will be the focus of “Dos Glorias Dos”, with the accompaniment of Dani de Morón, two high-level artisans directly from the source. The youthful perspective will be presented by Juan Moneo “Moneíto”, accompanied on guitar by the versatile Juan Diego.
Rounding out the program is El Canijo de Jerez, “El Nuevo Despertar de la Farándula Cósmica”…rumba, rock, funk tanguillos, reggae…singer and guitarist from the group Los Delincuentes who is bound to surprise, for better or for worse, anyone who attends the La Paloma room for this show.
There will be special shows for children with the company of José Galán who is presenting “En Mis Cabales”, “an integral project which is a tribute to deaf people, the disabled and madmen who have made history”, with the collaboration of Manuel Molina. Also for schoolchildren there will be shows by Chely “La Torito”.
This is one of the few festivals that gets the whole city involved…for ten days, Nimes will be the living soul of flamenco with lectures, workshops, master-classes, projections and other novelties for amateurs as well as professionals. Each January Nimes is a veritable flamenco fiesta.
