In 1956 in Córdoba, a contest was held for the first time which would set the standard for a series of similar events that would soon follow.Inspired in the historic Granada contest of 1922, and celebrated every three years, the prestigious event reaches its half century of existence with this eighteenth edition. The festival also marks a celebration and anniversary of the brilliant career of maestro Fosforito, last winner of the Llave de Oro del Cante and whose triumph at that first edition was absolute.
Application forms to participate in the contest are being accepted through March 16th from those people who wish to have a crack at a variety of prizes in dance, guitar and cante. The pre-selection, open to the public, will be held from April 23rd to 29th 2007, and the contest reaches its climax on May 12th with the awards ceremony and performance of the winners.
As in previous years, the festival has been scheduled to coincide with the festival of Cordoban patios.Since the first edition the contest has been promoted by the Córdoba municipal government, and since 1992 the Public Administration of the Gran Teatro de Córdoba where all the activities take place has been in charge of organizing and administering the event, including the gala performances by top stars which precede the actual contest. The importance of the Concurso de Córdoba is easily demonstrated by the roster of past winners which includes, in addition to Fosforito, Curro de Utrera, Fernanda and Bernarda de Utrera, Beni de Cádiz, José Menese, Matilde Coral, El Serna, Juan Talega, La Perla de Cádiz, Merche Esmeralda, Paco de Lucía, Naranjito de Triana, Chano Lobato, Manuela Carrasco, Paquera de Jerez, Serranito, El Lebrijano, Luis de Córdoba, Manolo Sanlúcar, Juan Habichuela, Mario Maya, Paco Cepero, El Pele, José Mercé, Rancapino, Vicente Amigo, Antonio el Pipa, Mayte Martín, Israel Galván and many others.
