Rarely do contest results please everyone, and this year in Córdoba was no exception.
Despite
an impressive roster of seasoned veterans and professionals, including
a large number from Jerez, the winners’ names don’t sound
too familiar. Worthy of note is the prize “Juan Carmona Habichuela”
for accompaniment which went to Eduarto Trassierra, winner of the last
Bienal, Belén López who carried off the “Mario Maya”
prize in dance, and in the cante competition, Antonio Porcuna “El
Veneno” who holds the Lámpara Minera de La Unión and
managed to win the “D. Antonio Chacón” prize, and veteran
singer Yeyé de Cádiz who after decades of singing for dance,
made a good enough showing to win the “Camarón” prize.
The prizes “Fosforito”, “Niña de los Peines”,
“Eduardo Serrano El Güito” and “Pilar López”,
as well as special prizes “Silverio” (for cante), “Antonio”
(for dance) and “Paco de Lucía” (for guitar) went unawarded
as per the judges’ decision, and in the street there are rumors
of a somewhat lower level compared to other years.
All the same, each and every one of the twelve lucky winners will now
see his or her career enhanced by the prestige that comes with winning
in Córdoba, and by the time the next edition rolls around in 2007,
it’s possible one or more of them might make it to the top. Deflamenco
offers its most sincere congratulations to all the winners.
