The morning of November 28th 2011, the official presentation of the program of the sixteenth Festival de Jerez took place in Jerez. Consolidated as the most important festival of its kind, there was a great deal of expectation to receive Paulino Plata, head of the Culture chamber of the Junta de Andalucía, and to hear the declarations of mayoress María José García Pelayo and her Culture delegate Antonio Real, as well as of María Ángeles Carrasco of the Instituto Andaluz del Flamenco and Isamay Benavente of the Teatro Villamarta, the festival’s director. As is logical, the program reflects the difficult economic circumstances that affect the country as well as the city, although a respectable program of top performances, parallel series and the important schedule of courses have been maintained. This year there will be no programs at midnight, and the Sala Paúl venue has been eliminated, but there are some large-scale productions, most notably the opening show “Metáfora” with the Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía under the direction of Rubén Olmo. Major dance figures like Israel Galván with his work “La Curva”, and Rocío Molina with “Vinática” will take over the stage of the Villamarta Theater, and Jerez natives will be filling up seats in the same place to see their local but international favorites like singers Macanita, Jesús Méndez, Manuel Moneo, Capullo de Jerez, El Torta, Fernando de la Morena, Luis Zambo, and dancers Antonio el Pipa, Andrés Peña with Pilar Ogalla in addition to Joaquín Grilo who closes out the festival with his work “La Mar de Flamenco”. Dancer Pastora Galván will also present her work “Pastora” in the venerable theater, as will Marco Flores his, “De Flamencas”, that presents the curiosity of an all-female backup. A popular night at the Villamarta will be the recital “Made in Jerez” of maestro Gerardo Núñez, and the presence of María Pagés with her show “Utopia” is also noteworthy. At the Sala la Compañía there is a varied offering with young dancers like Lucía Álvarez “La Piñona”, most recent winner at La Unión, Mercedes Ruiz, Manuela Carpio, Carrete de Málaga, Fuensanta la Moneta and the guitar duo of Alfredo Lagos and Dani de Morón among others. The series of acoustic recitals at the Palacio Villavicencio has a high level this year with singers such as Miguel Lavi, Rafael de Utrera, Pedro el Granaíno, Vicente Gelo and the solo guitar of Antonio Rey. After the press conference, questions from the media took on an open character with topics not related to the festival itself, and which centered on the projected Año del Flamenco (“It makes no sense to talk about the Año del Flamenco with a gaping hole in the Plaza Belén where the City of Flamenco is to be built” pointed out the mayor), and the restoration of the Santiago church. A generous program of shows in the city’s many flamenco peñas will fill out the afterhours, for visitors, one of the most interesting facets of the festival as these are privileged places where one can enjoy flamenco in an informal setting.
