Each year for the last fourteen years the Madrid winter is brightened by the
best flamenco dance, guitar and cante with the Festival Caja Madrid. «The
ninth province of Andalusia» as Spain’s capital is often called
due to the many artists from the south who have settled there, not to
mention homegrown ones of the first order, captures the attention of flamenco
fans the world over with an interesting series of recitals and complementary
activities.
This year’s guest speakers included José María Velázquez-Gaztelu
who will present the series Rito y Geografía del Cante which he
produced three decades ago and has recently been reedited in DVD format.
Others include José Manuel Gamboa with his book «Una historia
del flamenco», Antonio Díaz Fernández «Fosforito»
who just received the Llave de Oro del Cante and Manuel Ríos Ruiz
who will speak about the late singer Chocolate. All the conferences will
be accompanied by guitar and cante.
Performances included in the program at the Teatro Albéniz cover
a wide range of tastes, all based on the biggest flamenco stars of the
moment such as Manolo Sanlúcar, Enrique Morente, Miguel Poveda,
Macanita, Mayte Martín and Antonio el Pipa among many others.
On February 1st, within the festival program, Ángel Álvarez
Caballero will present the «Calle de Alcalá» prize
given annually to a distinguished artist who has worked a great deal in
Madrid, to the much admired Chano Lobato.
