13th FLAMENCO FESTIVAL 'LA YERBABUENA'

June 19th, 2004. 10:00pm Plaze De Atocha, Las Cabezas de San Juan

On June 19th the “YERBABUENA DE
PLATA” (the highest award) will be given to journalist Jesús
Quintero in Las Cabezas de San Juan in its traditional flamenco festival.

The
festival of “LA YERBABUENA” dates back to 1970 when a group
of artists and flamenco-lovers decided to organize a night of flamenco
cante, dance and guitar-playing with the idea of promoting this art as
the most genuine artistic and cultural expression of Andalucía,
at the same time paying tribute to a person whose lifelong contribution
in any of the various specialties was noteworthy.

For reasons having nothing to do with flamenco, the festival stopped
be held, but was later picked up again in 1996 thanks to municipal authorities.

Other people who have received the award include personalities from the
world of fine art, bullfighting, lyrical song, literature, theater, philanthropy
and of course flamenco, such as Juan Britto, Curro Romero, José
Mª Pemán, Camilo José Cela, Concha Piquer, Salvador
Távora, the Duchess de Alba, Juan Peña “El Lebrijano”,
Manolo Sanlúcar and Caballero Bonald among others.
