Flamenco dancer and choreographer Marco Flores has been honored with the XXVI Critics’ Award at the XXIX Festival de Jerez for his show Tierra Virgen, which was performed on March 5, 2025, at the Teatro Villamarta.
Previously, the awards granted by the Federación de Peñas Flamencas de Jerez were announced, recognizing Juan de la María for his participation in Muerta de amor by Manuel Liñán, and Irene Olivares for her performance at the Centro Cultural Flamenco Don Antonio Chacón.
This award, organized by the Cátedra de Flamencología y Estudios Folklóricos de Jerez in collaboration with the Consejo Regulador del Vino de Jerez, is determined by the votes of critics and accredited journalists attending the festival. In this edition, Tierra Virgen won by a narrow margin, closely surpassing Muerta de amor by Manuel Liñán’s company.
For Marco Flores, this is his second Critics’ Award, having previously won in 2012 with De flamencas. “Honestly, I wasn’t expecting it. I’m very happy,” said the dancer, emphasizing that on the night of March 5, “everything came together perfectly.” He also dedicated the award to everyone who contributed to making the show possible.
Premiered in November 2024 as part of XIX Suma Flamenca de Madrid, Tierra Virgen offers a reinterpretation of classical flamenco from a free perspective, blending tradition, rituals, and sacred elements with Ibero-American and popular influences. “It is a land that invites meditation and the free reinterpretation of rituals and traditions,” explains Marco Flores.
The show features music by guitarist José Tomás, singing by Manuel de la Nina and Enrique Remache, choreographic coordination by Patricia Ruiz, and the special collaboration of guest artist Chelo Pantoja.
With this award, the Festival de Jerez once again highlights the talent and creativity of artists who continue to push flamenco toward new horizons.
